Tinita Engineering Delivers Fractionator Column to IOCL – Vadodara Refinery

Mumbai, India, 2021: In 2021, Tinita Engineering Pvt. Ltd. created, fabricated, and delivered a Fractionator Column for Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), Vadodara Refinery. The column was designed for high-temperature and high-pressure hydrocarbon service built to meet stringent standards for reliability and corrosion resistance.

Carbon Steel (CS) + SS 317L and CS + Monel 400 cladding were used in this intricate metallurgical project. The blend ensured long-term performance in demanding refinery operations where durability and strength are critical.

Design and Construction Details

With an internal diameter of 3,400 mm and a total length of 39,599 mm’ the fractionator column that was supplied to the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), Vadodara Refinery was a large-scale construction. It was built with carbon steel (CS), clad with SS 317L and Monel 400 to withstand severe operating conditions and was intended for hydrocarbon service. The apparatus was designed to operate at a temperature of 167°C and a pressure of 7 kg/cm².  With a shell and dish end thickness of 16 mm reinforced by 3 mm of cladding, the column weighed 70 MT in total. To guarantee dependability and a long service life in refinery operations, every specification was precisely fulfilled.

Dispatch in Three Sections

Given the size and weight of the column, the dispatch was carefully planned in three major sections to allow for safe transport and efficient installation at site.

  • Section 01: From Elevation 19,825 mm up to the top dome
  • Section 02: From Elevation 8,600 mm to 19,825 mm
  • Section 03: From foundation up to Elevation 8,600 mm (inclusive of skirt section)

This staged delivery reduced logistical challenges and guaranteed that the equipment could be erected smoothly and safely at the refinery.

Fabrication Excellence

The Fractionator Column represents Tinita Engineering’s capability to handle heavy fabrication involving exotic cladding. The project required accurate design, skilled welding and stringent quality control. Every step was monitored to maintain compliance with client specifications.

The fabrication team worked on a 39.5-meter-long column with a shell thickness supported by 3 mm of corrosion-resistant cladding. With a weight of 70 MT the equipment demanded careful planning and staged dispatch. The three-section delivery ensured smooth handling, while also reducing risks linked with transport and installation.

The selection of SS 317L and Monel 400 cladding addressed the difficulties of hydrocarbon service at high temperatures. These alloys are known for their strength, resistance to stress cracking, and protection against aggressive refinery environments. The integration of CS with such alloys offered both strength and corrosion resistance.

Role in Refinery Operations

Fractionator columns are central to refining. They separate crude oil into fractions at different boiling points. The Vadodara column was designed for reliability, ensuring smooth functioning with minimal downtime. These difficulties were addressed in the design of the column that was provided to IOCL Vadodara.
